The best vacuum for laminate floors

Dyson DC26 Multi floor canister

Dyson DC26 Multi floor canister

The unit's pieces all fit together with precision - no friction fit like some vacs.
Small, light, very good power for its size. Used mostly for hardwoods the floor attachment works nicely.
The attachment uses carbon fibers to help sweep the floor while vacuuming, yet dust doesn't stick to them - nice touch.
For a few Persian rugs, I use the air-driven power head for periodic cleaning which is effective but not aggressive. It is smaller than most, but is handy for getting around and under furniture.

Unfortunately, function followed form with respect to the power cord. It is far is too short - another 5 feet would have made a big difference in usefulness.

Generally, the DC26 lives up to its marketing. It has been well conceived and executed. I bought it new, online for $300 with free shipping, which makes it a good value.

  1. ...but this vacuum kicks butt. I am not a fan of the Dyson uprights at all: they are Sherman tanks and not precise but this little thing is terrific. I clean homes and have tried many many vacuums; I'd have to say this and my Oreck are the best. The complaints of the previous reviewers can be offset by the many plusses you get here, namely that it's lightweight and has incredible suction for the size. Mine came without a box or instructions but it's so intuitive that for once I didn't need instructions! As a housecleaner I prefer two vacuums: an upright for big carpeted areas and a canister for bare floors, tight spaces, stairs, counters, ceilings, walls, crevices and lampshades to name a few. I rarely love vacuums and NEVER did I think I'd love a Dyson. Very expensive but if you figure cost per use it's worth every penny.

  3. I bought this canister knowing it was small. That is a good thing, since my one bedroom apartment has only one closet for storage. I love it, its clean, it doesn't blow moldy air around the place, and it's very convenient to do my car. The one thing I do wish was that the brush attachment was more powerful, and larger. Other than that. I love it.

  4. I read the previous review and decided to purchase this vacuum anyway. Before purchasing I looked at practically every vacuum on the market and if I lived in a slightly bigger home, I probably would purchase a Miele or bigger Dyson instead. As it is, I live in a VERY small condo that has practically no storage space and this has turned out to be THE ideal vacuum for me! I have hardwood floors, tile and carpet in my home so I LOVE the fact that I can use this machine on all three! My place is so small that I had been using a hand-held Dirt Devil vacuum for my carpet and a Swiffer for the hardwood floors and tile. I really wanted to get a canister vacuum to get under my couch, furniture, etc. but I needed to also have something that would be reasonably small to store. This vacuum has been perfect!
It is true that the vacuum does NOT leave "waves" on your carpet when you vacuum, but that is not a deal breaker for me. The vacuum is also rather expensive for what you get, but again, there is nothing else on the market that is this small and this powerful! One thing I would add is that once it is assembled, it is a bit bigger than you might expect because of the hose. I had to wrap the hose around the "stick" part to store it in the available space I have, but it fits perfectly!
As far as actual cleaning, it works great! I find it to be much quieter than the vacuum it replaced and it has TONS of suction. The exhaust is so strong that it slowly spun my ceiling fans around as I cleaned. Impressive power, indeed!
If you live in a very small home/space/condo, then I would say look no further! This is exactly what you want to buy! If you have a lot of space you may want something more powerful and/or cheaper. However, I'm very impressed by the performance and I LOVE the small size...nothing bigger would fit in my home!

  6. After long hours spent searching for a vacuum for ceramic tile and hardwood floors and even purchasing a Bissell PowerEdge Pet unfortunately it succumbed to the sheer volume of hair generated by my two adorable Himalayan cats. Back to my reliable but time consuming Libman broom to sweep all 900 sq. ft. of my house. Then I saw an ad for the City Vac and I figured why not. It had the hard floor attachment, wouldn't take up too much storage space and as Mr. Dyson always says, it won't lose suction.

I am on my second week of ownership and I've used it every day. As many have mentioned, there is the need to empty the collection bin frequently but when doing so I also move it to the next room outlet so I don't have any issues with the cord length. Since I've only used the hard floor attachment I do find myself flipping it over occasionally to get the hair puffs unstuck from the bristles but even with the puffs it doesn't lose suction! I really love that it easily lays flat to get under furniture and the swivel head easily maneuvers around tight spots. I am pleased as punch with this vacuum!

  7. I have been looking for a new vacuum for several weeks. We had a Miele Flamenco for several years and loved it, but it moved to DC with my sister. The Miele was good - reliable, good suction and easy to maneuver - but the bags were pretty expensive relative to other brands. I was looking for another Miele but they're pretty pricey. I thought about uprights, several brands, canisters, etc. My wish list for a vacuum was that it was good on both hardwood/tile floors and carpet, with easy hose attachments and strong suction for the tools (like the crevice tool.) We have some cats that don't shed much, but they're cats nonetheless and they leave some hair on upholstery.

I had decided on a Kenmore bagged canister, they were the right price and highly rated on Consumer Reports and elsewhere. When I went to go buy one at Sears, I investigated Dyson. I was under the impression that bagless canister vacs had expensive HEPA filters and made a mess when being emptied. I also thought Dyson was high priced because of clever marketing and that British guy on the commercials yakking it up about not losing suction. Well, this machine was reasonably priced for the caliber I was looking for and it had all the right features. The filters are washed with cold water and you don't have to buy anything else. Just re-use the existing filter. It is exactly like the larger model (same size motor) the only difference is that it is smaller, the main vacuum attachment is a little narrower, and it comes with a bonus hard-floor attachment (which is not included with the larger model.) Both vacuums (larger Dyson and Dyson City) were the same price, and despite not having significant storage space issues, I selected the smaller version. I love it so far. The only thing that I'm finding is that you pull out a small piece to activate the brush rotation, and it is easy to bump and de-activate the brush. It works fine not rotating, but it works better on carpet when the brush rotates. Otherwise I think it is a fantastic vacuum and would suggest it for the general vacuumer (lots of pets/kids/dirt might be annoying to empty the canister frequently, but for my use, it didn't fill up too fast and it is really easy to empty.) Attachments and hose disconnect are super easy.

  8. Some reviewers had a few negative comments which put me off a little...like the power cord was too short and the machine was too light. Baloney! The cord is long enough to cover ANY normal room and retracts back into the machine flawlessly. Also, when was the last time you could pick up a powerful machine and carry it effortlessly to where you needed it. Great design, great performance.
